C - Irish in the Community (2 questions)

Language renews itself continuously as people live their lives through that language. The traditional Irish language communities live in Gaeltacht areas. The growth of language communities outside the Gaeltacht would be a measure of major support for the Irish language. Communities themselves are continuously and rapidly changing, a fact that offers both challenges and opportunities for the Irish language.

The future of a language depends on our young people. The language will not be transmitted to future generations unless young people choose to transmit it to the next generation. Youth brings vibrancy and vitality to a language. Young people often develop new aspects of living in the language. What do you think?

Arts provide an important arena for the promotion of Irish. The arts often ‘influence’ public attitudes in general. Public leaders often emerge from the arts and better recognition is now afforded to the link between the arts and economic development. The arts prove important for providing new ideas and insights.

Language usage in business influences the status afforded by the community to that language. Should the language prove “useful” to get a job or career more people associate with that language and learn it. As our economy changes and the information society develops Irish faces new challenges if it wishes to play more of a part in this area.

With the development of information technologies languages have succeeded in creating communication systems as supports to facilitate their own language communities. As a result of these developments people not previously interested are now attracted to that language. These systems often give the language community a voice and an opportunity to present themselves to the wider world.
